Enter your viewing distance and how you work. PixelSpan recommends a screen size range, checks the sharpness of any size and resolution combination, and shows the physical width and desk depth you need.

How to choose the right monitor size

The best monitor size depends on how far your eyes are from the screen. Too small and you lean forward and squint; too large and you turn your head to see the corners, which strains your neck over a working day. For most desks the comfortable viewing distance is 50 – 80 cm (20 – 32 in), roughly an arm's length. PixelSpan converts that distance into a recommended diagonal and adjusts it for the type of work you do and for ultrawide screens.

Resolution, PPI and pixels per degree

Pixels per inch (PPI) describes how dense the pixels are on the panel: a 24" Full HD monitor has about 92 PPI, a 27" 1440p monitor 109 PPI and a 27" 4K monitor 163 PPI. But what you actually see depends on distance too. Pixels per degree (PPD) combines both: it counts how many pixels fit in one degree of your vision. Around 60 PPD is the limit of normal 20/20 visual acuity – above it, individual pixels disappear and text looks print-sharp.

    PPI = horizontal pixels ÷ screen width (in) · PPD ≈ PPI × distance (in) × tan(1°)

    Recommended combinations

One large monitor or two smaller ones?

Dual 24 – 27" monitors are cheap and flexible: one for reference material, one for work. An ultrawide gives a seamless canvas for timelines, spreadsheets and games. Productivity studies show multi-screen setups can speed up tasks that involve comparing or copying information; for focused writing a single screen is enough.

    Frequently asked questions

What size monitor is best for office work?

At a typical 60 – 75 cm desk distance, a 24 – 27 inch 16:9 monitor is ideal. 27 inch 1440p or 4K is the most popular choice for productivity.

How far should I sit from a 27 inch monitor?

About 60 – 80 cm (24 – 32 in). Closer than 50 cm you will move your head to see the edges.

Is 1080p enough on a 27 inch monitor?

It works, but at 81 PPI text looks soft at normal distance. 1440p or 4K is recommended for 27 inch screens.

What is a good PPI for a monitor?

About 100 – 110 PPI is comfortable at desk distance; 140 PPI or more with scaling gives very sharp text.

Is an ultrawide better than two monitors?

An ultrawide removes the center bezel and suits timelines and spreadsheets; two monitors are cheaper and easier to split between tasks.

    About PixelSpan

PixelSpan is an independent, free display calculator for choosing office, programming, design and gaming monitors. It uses standard geometry and visual acuity limits. We are not affiliated with any monitor brand.

Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.

The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
